“Since when did you become so careless?” Daniel snapped angrily as his wife accidentally spilled juice over an important document.

Bisi froze immediately. She was embarrassed and already apologizing in her heart.

But instead of calming the moment, she fired back,
“And since when did you become so rude?”

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Daniel, already carrying the weight of hidden struggles from work, exploded in anger. What should have been a small misunderstanding turned into a terrible fight that left both of them wounded emotionally and physically.

Days later, after tears, regret, and painful silence, Bisi realized something important:
Not every harsh statement deserves a harsh reply.

She remembered the Scripture:
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

And she thought deeply about all the softer responses she could have given instead:

“I’m sorry, it was a mistake.”
“I understand you’re upset.”
“Please calm down, let me help fix it.”
“Talk to me gently, I didn’t mean to do it.”

She realized that while she could not always control another person’s emotions, she could control her response.

Many battles are not won by strength, but by wisdom.
One harsh word can ignite a fire.
One gentle response can extinguish it.

This does not justify violence or abusive behavior, wrong is wrong.
But wisdom teaches us that peaceful words can prevent unnecessary destruction.

Before you reply in anger, pause.
Ask yourself:
“Will my words heal this moment… or worsen it?”

Lord, teach me to respond with wisdom even when emotions rise.
Father, help me control my tongue and speak words that bring peace.
