“Should I run and risk being punished for walking out on Father?
Should I tell him I’ll pray about it, and then actually hear God say it’s true?”
No way! Both options looked like death traps. So I sat there frozen.
“Do I take your silence as consent?” Father Soji asked, his voice smooth as silk. At this point, I couldn’t differentiate between Soji or Father, so let’s start calling him Father Soji.
Consent ke?
Consent for what? Marriage… or something else?
My brain did a quick reverse and caught a piece of the scripture he had quoted earlier … the part about being naked and becoming one flesh.
God please!
All these years of keeping myself… must not waste like this!
Was this man about to force his way?
Before my heart could explode, he added quickly,
“Relax… I hope you’re not thinking I would have you without proper marriage before God!”
Ha! Where have we landed? Who dug this pit for me?
I wanted to snap:
“I have not said yes, Sir!”
But wisdom is profitable to direct, so I swallowed my sass.
Instead I said carefully,
“Sir, I don’t think I’m the one.”
If I wasn’t saved, I could have sworn I saw his eyes flash red.
Mabel, calm down. This is not one of those Korean reincarnation films, or vampire movies, or Wolverine action. This is real life. This is an African man.
“You ARE the one! I know what I heard!” he said Firmly.
“Sir, you heard wrongly!” was what I wanted to say.
What I actually said was:
“My parents… I have to inform them.”
And then I wanted to slap myself.
“Mabel, where did that one come from?”
He quoted back immediately,
“A man shall leave his father and mother and cleave…”
“Yes, Sir. But before the cleaving, parents must give their blessings,” I countered, shocking myself at the boldness. Maybe the Spirit was helping me.
“Your parents are not saints. They cannot attend the wedding in the Household,” he replied coldly.
“Then I am sorry, Father. I am not the one.”
“YOU ARE THE ONE!” he roared.
Yes Roared …
And this time, it wasn’t Soji speaking. It was FATHER in capital letters … booming, shaking, terrifying. Then, as if switching gears, Soji’s softer tone followed quickly:
“Stop saying that. Father doesn’t like it “
Ah. So the man had dual SIM cards inside him? Mortal and Immortal? Bipolar and Eternal? God ABEG!
“Please, if we marry, who will be my husband … Father or Soji?” I asked myself.
At that ridiculous thought, I lost it…
I wanted to Laugh and apparently, I did. I couldn’t help it because …. if that was not funny, what then was?
“You’re laughing?” he asked, narrowing his eyes.
“Yes,” I said, covering my mouth quickly. “I’m laughing at the great task you’ve said God wants me to handle. Sir, I do not doubt your revelation, but I know myself … I don’t have the capacity heaven thinks I have to be the Third Eve. Or is it Second Eve, since the Second Adam didn’t even have an Eve?”
He stared at me. I laughed again.
This laughter of mine will not put me in trouble o.
“Do you know how many saints would want to be in your shoes?” he asked.
I answered him from my mind ..
“Sir, I wear a size 40. They can try it. For those with small feet, there’s always shoe pad.”
He leaned closer.
“Do you know you are the first woman ever to enter this Garden?”
“Ohhh…” I thought. “That explains MS Laura’s shock.”
“Sir, we can erase the memory of my coming here. Please, look for someone else. There are saints who better fit this highly exalted position. Take MS Laura, for example.”
I pressed the wrong button.
Because Father Soji’s eyes changed. He stared long at me… then without a word, turned and walked out of the Garden.
I sat there, heart pounding.
“Ha! Mabel… what have you done?”
