WHEN TOLERANCE TURNS TO TRAP
A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

Chiamaka noticed something unsettling about her colleague at work.
Every lunch break, this colleague would sit with her and whisper all the wrong things about others in the office. At first, Chiamaka responded with polite nods and the occasional “hmm, it is well.” She told herself she was simply being tolerant.
But after weeks, she realized that her spirit always felt heavy after these conversations. Worse still, she noticed that she began to look at her other colleagues with suspicion, subconsciously adopting the negativity she kept listening to.
One day, she remembered how Jesus handled the devil in the wilderness. For a while, He responded with scripture, but at some point He drew the line and said: “Away from me, Satan!” (Matthew 4:10)
That afternoon, Chiamaka gently but firmly told her colleague:
“I’d rather not have these kinds of conversations. If we’re going to talk, let’s talk about things that build up, not tear others down.”
Her colleague was shocked at first, but surprisingly, over time, she changed. She began to avoid gossip herself and even admitted later that the firm rebuke helped her reflect on her behavior.

As Christians, tolerance is a virtue but when wrongly applied, it becomes a trap.
When you keep silent in the face of gossip, arrogance, or pride, you risk being gradually initiated into the same toxic pattern. Tolerating evil is not humility; it is silent approval.
Jesus Himself shows us that there is a time to say “Enough!” He did not tolerate Satan forever, He rebuked him. Sometimes your rebuke may not only protect your own soul, but it may also save someone else from destruction.
Friend, it’s time to ask:
👉 Who am I tolerating that is slowly corrupting my spirit?
👉 What “trash” have I allowed into my conversations, my friendships, my circle?
Remember: Rebuking in love is not wickedness, it is deliverance.
