‘WHEN THE CALL CAME…’
A Deep Thoughts Devotional

Bukola was right in the middle of her big presentation. Months of hard work had led to this moment, her chance to pitch to a multinational firm and secure the deal of her life.
Dressed in her sharpest suit, voice poised and confident, she was just about to wrap up when her phone vibrated silently beside her laptop. She glanced at it, her son’s school.
She ignored it. Then it rang again. And again.
“Sorry,” she told the room. “Just a moment.” She excused herself and stepped outside to take the call.
“Mrs. Ajayi, your son collapsed during Physical Education. He’s being rushed to the hospital. You need to come now.”
Her heart dropped.
As she grabbed her car keys, her mind raced, not just from fear but regret.
She had skipped his PTA meeting last week. Brushed off his complaints of fatigue the night before. Told him, “Mummy is busy right now” more times than she could count. She loved him, yes. But did he know that beyond the new shoes and fancy lunchbox?
That day, Bukola made a vow: If he wakes up, I’ll never let anything come before him again.
Thankfully, her son recovered. But her life shifted from that day.

Sometimes it takes a moment of crisis to reveal where our true priorities lie.
Yes, we must work. Yes, goals matter. But our first ministry, the people God has entrusted to us at home should never be sacrificed on the altar of success.
It’s easy to say, “I’m doing this for my family,” yet lose the family while doing it.
God doesn’t just call us to provide money, He calls us to provide presence, attention, affection, and guidance.
So today, before the urgent overshadows the important, take a step back and ask yourself honestly:
“What truly matters most to me?”
*****
SCRIPTURE:
“Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred.” — Proverbs 15:17 (NIV)
*****
PRAYER:
1. Lord, help me realign my heart with what truly matters.
2. Deliver me from the deception of busyness that robs me of intimacy with my family.
3. Help me to steward well the relationships You’ve entrusted into my hands.
