‘THE DANGER OF COPYING WRONG’

Tobi had just joined the choir in his new church. Excited and eager to grow, he looked up to the music director, a gifted singer with a magnetic stage presence and deep biblical insight. Everything about him seemed inspiring… until one day, Tobi accidentally overheard him joking about sleeping with one of the backup singers.

Shocked, Tobi began to lose faith in everything.
“If someone like him can live like this and still lead worship, what’s the point of struggling to live right?”
He started lowering his guard, skipping prayers, justifying small compromises, and telling himself, “Everyone has their flaws.”

Until one Sunday, an elderly woman in the church said something that stuck with him:
“Don’t lose Jesus because of Judas.”
Those words hit like a thunderbolt.

He realized he had made a mistake: copying a flawed man instead of following a flawless God.

Sadly, there will always be spiritual leaders and mentors who preach righteousness but walk in contradiction. And while their actions may shake us, we must remember, Jesus is the standard, not man.

When Jesus warned about the Pharisees in Matthew 23:3, He said:
“So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.”

God may use imperfect people to teach perfect truth. Our responsibility is to discern, obey the Word, and never allow the failings of men to become our excuse to sin.

Imitating their failure doesn’t just damage us, it distances us from the God we’re truly meant to follow. Instead of stumbling over their weaknesses, let’s lift them up in prayer, asking God to restore them while we keep our eyes on Christ.

Prayer:

Lord, help me never to lose sight of You because of the imperfections of men.
Give me the discernment to follow truth even when it’s spoken by broken vessels.
And as a leader, help me walk in alignment with what I teach, so I never become a stumbling block to others.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
