CHAPTER 6- “THIS FAMILY CALLED MINE: COLOUR US UP”

The fear was evident on our faces.

“What’s wrong?” Tobe taunted with a wicked grin. “The fear is real! You’ve suddenly realized all that noise since you got here was highly unnecessary.”

He stood tall, pride in his voice.

“Don’t tell me you’re scared that you won’t get anything. Don’t be… I was kind enough to beg our father to include you all in the will. Although, I don’t know how small or big your portions will be, but I love surprises. So… let’s just wait for my father-in-law to get here.”

He was enjoying the show. Every smirk, every word… a dagger to our hearts.

Morayo and Setemi went quiet. The twist had caught them off guard. They didn’t see it coming.

Then, without warning, Morayo grabbed her car key and headed for the door.

“Oops! Don’t tell me you’re walking out before the real fight begins,” Tobe jeered. “Come on now… Don’t make it too easy for me to claim the largest chunk. Because if you leave, I’ll have no choice but to take your share too!”

He chuckled wickedly.

Morayo didn’t respond. She was less concerned! She walked right out of the house.

I ran after her.

“Morayo… don’t leave,” I pleaded. “Let’s not give him the pleasure of taking everything. You’re the only one who can confront him. Let’s at least wait to see the video ourselves.”

“Mo’, I can’t sit there and watch that man…that failure of a father…ridicule me in front of those imbeciles,” she said, her voice cracking.

“Never! I don’t have much, but I have my self-esteem. I have been struggling all these years, and I didn’t die. Can you see how wicked that man is, even in death he still hates us .. Is it our fault that we are women?” For the first time in a long time, I saw Morayo break…. Tears flowed…

I quickly hugged her! No one should see Morayo break! She was our strength. I was not going to give Tobe the pleasure of seeing that…

“Mo’ I am tired of being a call girl, when I heard he died yesterday… I screamed Freedom!… I felt if he was useless to us when he was alive, at least he would be useful in death, but see what he has done again… Mo’ I can tell you that Will will not favour us” Morayo said emphatically…

I knew she was right! But a part of me felt we should wait…

“Morayo… let’s wait,” I whispered.

Just then, Setemi and Pamilerin walked out to meet us.

“Don’t leave,” Setemi said firmly. “Let’s fight this. We didn’t fight back when he was alive, but now, we must. Either we get what is rightfully ours, or no one gets anything. I refuse to be a coward anymore.”

“And how do we fight it?” Morayo asked, ever the realist. “If the lawyer gets here and hands over the documents to Tobe and the boys, what do we do…snatch them?”

“What if… the lawyer never arrives?” Setemi asked with a straight face. “Or what if the video never gets played?”

We went dead silent. Setemi had been raised by my father to be hard and unforgiving. She was constantly fighting for her position as a first born. Our Father imposed Tobe on her , while Morayo took charge when she had to… This made her brutal…

“Meaning…?” Morayo asked cautiously.

“Let your borrowed car be useful for a few minutes,” Setemi replied.

Morayo caught her drift. She opened the car, and we all got in.

“I know several diabolical means of getting that will,” Setemi said boldly.

Pamilerin nodded. She had always been Setemi’s loyal ally.

Morayo and I exchanged a look.

“You? Aren’t you a deaconess in your church?” Morayo asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Who has that helped?” Setemi scoffed. “With five daughters? You think I’ll just sit in church and let the same fate that destroyed Mum’s life destroy mine? Never!”

“What have you done?” I asked cautiously.

“I’ve tied his manhood to a tree. He can never impregnate another woman again. My daughters are his only heirs,” she said proudly.

“Hmmm,” I exhaled. I was never one for diabolical means.

She suddenly turned to me. “And you, why don’t you have kids yet?”

“We’re working on it,” I replied, trying not to snap.

Morayo, ever the shield, jumped in. “So… what’s the plan?” she asked.

Instead of replying, Setemi pulled out her phone and dialed a number.

The call connected, and the voice on the other end picked up.

“Mama Adeola, how are you?” an elderly man’s voice asked warmly.

“Baba… I’m not fine. I need your help,” she said, placing the call on speaker.

“What’s wrong, my daughter?” he asked.

“My father died yesterday. Now I just found out the lawyer is coming to read his will. He’s already on his way. I don’t want him to get here.”

“Not get there? You mean get lost?”

” Yes…Get lost!” 

“Temporarily. Or… permanently?”

” All of the above!” Setemi replied without any form of conscience.

A heavy silence filled the car.

The man replied calmly, “Count it done. Just send me his name.”

Setemi’s face was stone cold as she ended the call.

And right there in the car… I realized… this wasn’t just a will drama.

This was WAR and Setemi didn’t come to play…
