CHAPTER 15 “CORDELIA”

For three days, the words of that strange man in my room haunted me.
“Don’t struggle with it. It is ordained.”
Ordained what? To marry Father? To be Eve 2.0? To drink dirty water from a well like in my vision?
I was drowning in questions, and Cordelia was avoiding me like plague.
Finally, I caught her alone.
It was during dish duty, when the hall was empty and everyone else was in one of their endless “reflection hours.”
“Cordelia,” I whispered sharply, cornering her near the sink.
She stiffened. Her eyes darted around the room like rabbits searching for hawks.
“Aunty Mabel… don’t,” she said, voice shaking.
“Don’t what? Don’t talk to you? Don’t remind you who you really are? Or don’t ask you what they did to you in Father’s quarters?”
Her lips trembled. For a moment, the mask slipped. Tears shimmered in her eyes.
“They broke me,” she whispered, voice like glass cracking.
“They realigned me. They stripped everything until nothing was left. And then they put… him… in me.”
” Put him in you? What does that mean?”
Her whole body shook. Then, as if she realized she had said too much, she snapped her face back into that robotic saint-smile.
“Blend in, Aunty. Stop resisting. Father has chosen you.”
“Chosen me for what?”
She didn’t answer. She just turned away, muttering under her breath like a prisoner repeating the warder’s orders.
My heart clenched.
Cordelia was in there somewhere, buried alive.
That evening, during devotion, Father called me out.
I knew it was coming.
“Mabel,” he said, his velvet voice wrapping around me like a snake, “the Spirit has spoken again.”
The saints turned in unison, eyes drilling into me.
“You are Eve,” he declared. “The Helper suitable. The flesh of my flesh. The one appointed to complete Eden.”
The hall shook with gasps and chants of “Kairos! Kairos!”
I swallowed hard. My throat felt like sand. Is this a strategy ? An Open Proposal so that I would not be able to say no.
Inside me, Mabel the sarcastic voice screamed:
Eve ke? God forbid! After years of celibacy, is it here I will now fall and be remembered as ‘Eve of Kairos’?
But outwardly, I bowed my head, trying to buy time.
“Father… I must pray. I must be sure.”
His smile didn’t reach his eyes.
“Pray if you must. But you already know. It is ordained.”
Ordained! That word again.
Back in my room, I lay on my bed, staring at the ceiling, whispering.
“Lord, if this ordination is of you, give me strength, but If this is deception, open a way of escape.”
” The Saints’ Vigil happens tomorrow” one of the Saints in my room announced…

It’s the fact that despite Mabel’s unfavourable surrounding, she chose to always wait on God. To commune with him in her heart. To keep in mind her assignment despite the distractions and bondage in the name of rules.

Hmmm…God’s ways are not our ways with Mabel’s two revelation I really don’t think your assignment is marrying him but rather liberating the people from the dirt they’ve been sinked into. But father is misinterpreting it to be marriage just like Temi in Brother John’s life. God send her help and help her to start afloat and not sink too.
