WHEN LOOKING BACK SEEMS EASIER
A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

Tola sat at the bus stop clutching her small nylon bag filled with résumés. It had been three years since she graduated, and the job search had become her daily routine. As she waited for another interview, the thought crossed her mind:
“Wouldn’t it have been better if I had stayed back in my father’s shop? At least I wouldn’t be broke and constantly disappointed.”
Her heart grew heavy. The memories of her past life—comfortable but without responsibility—suddenly looked attractive compared to her current struggle.
But then, as she scrolled through her Bible app, her eyes fell on a familiar story. The Israelites, fresh out of Egypt, had once cried out in fear when Pharaoh’s army pursued them. Instead of remembering God’s mighty hand of deliverance, they longed for the onions and bread of slavery.
Tola paused. She realized that her longing for “what was” was no different. She was forgetting that God didn’t bring her this far to abandon her. He had led her out because there was a promised land ahead.
That evening, she whispered a new prayer:
“Lord, help me not to look back in regret. Teach me to trust that the future You planned is brighter than the past I left behind.”
And with that, her heart felt lighter. She didn’t yet have the job, but she had regained her faith—faith that God was writing a bigger story with her life.
Sometimes, life will tempt you to think the past was better than where you are now. But don’t be deceived—God is not finished with you. He is working out a future that is greater than anything you left behind.
The truth is simple: looking back in regret blinds you from seeing the glory ahead.
Keep moving forward. Trust Him. Your tomorrow will make sense of your today.
KEY SCRIPTURE:
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
PRAYER POINTS:
Lord, forgive me for every time I doubted Your plans and wished to return to my past.
Father, strengthen my faith to trust You even when my present situation looks hard.
Lord, open my eyes to the great future You have prepared for me, and help me walk into it with confidence.
