‘WHEN COMFORT BECOMES A CAGE’

“Shalewa, this isn’t just about comfort… it’s about eternity,” I said, gripping her hand.
She laughed, half-heartedly. “Ireti, you don’t understand. Do you know how long it took me to get here? A luxury apartment in Lekki, international trips, contracts on speed dial… You want me to throw it all away just like that?”
Shalewa, Amaka, and I were inseparable. Our bond was built in the corridors of compromise, sugar daddies, shady deals, and the shimmering illusion of success. It wasn’t that we didn’t know the truth; we just didn’t want to listen… until that night.
We had stepped out for one of our usual exclusive parties when a street preacher outside the venue stopped us. Unlike others who were easy to ignore, this man spoke straight into our souls. He told us things no one knew things only God could have revealed. He warned us: “The gates of mercy are still open, but the clock is ticking. Don’t let comfort cost you your soul.”
That night, something shifted. Amaka and I broke down. We left everything; the men, the money, the status. It hurt. But we knew it was life or death. Shalewa, however, hesitated. “I’ll join you girls soon,” she promised.
Weeks passed. Then months. We moved on. Amaka joined a mission school in Kenya. I started working with a Christian NGO. We tried reaching out, but Shalewa stopped picking our calls.
Fast forward 20 years.
Today, as I drove through Lagos Island in my Prado, I saw her or what was left of her. Matted hair, torn clothes, screaming at no one in particular. I slammed the brakes, heart racing.
Could this be the same Shalewa who once dined with senators and flew private jets?
I called Amaka immediately. She wept on the phone. “I heard,” she said. “They said after her last scandal, something broke in her mind. She wandered off, never recovered.”
Tears streamed down my face. Comfort had become her cage… and when she refused to walk away, the cage became her grave.
Dear friend, are you still lingering in the false comfort of sin? Are you holding on to a life God is asking you to leave behind? Listen, mercy is still available. The path out might be painful, but it leads to life. Please, don’t look back. And if you’ve already stepped out of sin, don’t return, not even in your thoughts.
Remember Lot’s wife. She looked back, and became a monument of regret.
Don’t let comfort cost you eternity.
