‘WHAT DO THEY REALLY LOVE?’

Kunle had become the talk of the town; an award-winning tech innovator, featured on major platforms. Suddenly, everyone wanted to be his “friend.” But deep inside, he often wondered, “If I lost this genius spark tomorrow, would these people still stick around?”

Same with Lara, the gospel singer whose voice stirred hearts. Invitations poured in, messages flooded her inbox, some professing love, others promising fame. But Lara noticed a pattern: the more silent her seasons, the fewer the “I care about you” messages she received.

And there was Efe, an assistant pastor whose ministry was rising. The ladies at church called him “Pastor Fire.” But was it Efe they really admired? Or just the anointing on him?

Friend, here’s a sobering truth: many people are drawn to the oil, not the vessel. Your presence may not be their treasure, it’s the gift you carry that pulls them close.

Even Jesus wasn’t exempt. The same crowd that shouted “Hosanna!” with palm branches was quick to yell “Crucify Him!” days later. Why? The moment He no longer met their expectations of a political savior, their affection vanished.

Joseph too had a taste of this. Potiphar’s wife was infatuated not with Joseph as a person, but with his handsomeness, his influence, and his divine grace. And when he refused her advances, the same attraction turned into false accusation (Genesis 39).

This is why you must guard your oil. Don’t mistake applause for affection. Don’t confuse admiration for loyalty. Be discerning enough to know who loves you for who you are — not just what you bring.

Prayer Points:

1. Lord, help me to never lose the grace and gift You’ve placed on my life, in Jesus’ name.

2. Father, open my eyes to recognize true friends from seasonal fans, in Jesus’ name.

3. Every spirit of pride that wants to make me careless with my oil, I reject you in Jesus’ name!

4. Lord, surround me with people who love me for who I am, not just for what I carry.

5. I receive wisdom and discernment to protect my calling, influence, and assignment from emotional traps, in Jesus’ name.

Dear friend, be wise. The world often loves the glory more than the giver. But you can stay relevant and whole by guarding your oil, walking in humility, and staying anchored to the One who truly loves you, Jesus.
