‘THE BOY WITH THE PROPHECY’

I’ll never forget the echo of jubilant drumming that morning, the village was alive like never before. A child had been born to Morounke and her husband, Adewale, and the village prophet announced him as “the child of glory,” a destiny carrier, a foretold star. The boy was named Ayotunde,“Joy has returned.”

The celebrations were loud, spontaneous, and overwhelming. Gifts poured in. Songs were composed. It was as if the whole land had been waiting for his arrival.

That same day, in the quiet backroom of a clay house near the stream, another baby was born to Ewatomi, a young widow. There were no drums for her son, only whispered congratulations. She named him Seyi, short for Oluwaseyi, “God has done this.”

Both boys grew up in the same village. But while Ayotunde basked in the praise of destiny, he slowly lost the discipline of preparation. He believed the prophecy was enough. He stopped going to the farm. He expected doors to open on their own. He waited for greatness to fall into his lap. After all, he was the chosen one.

Seyi, on the other hand, kept his head down. No prophecies had been declared over him, but he worked with excellence. He studied under elders, helped his mother, and learned about the soil and seasons. Slowly but surely, he became the young man everyone wanted to work with.

Now I, Mama Alake, daughter of the late village prophet, sit in my old age watching how life unfolded. Ayotunde passed away quietly, his days marked more by regret than impact. Meanwhile, Seyi became the pioneer of the village’s agricultural revolution, the man who exported produce internationally, and built schools across towns.

What did I learn?
Prophecy is not a guarantee of greatness.

Yes, God speaks. Yes, divine declarations are real. But without diligence, they remain words floating in the wind. “Do you see a man diligent in his business? He will stand before kings…” (Proverbs 22:29)

Don’t wait for greatness. Work toward it.
Your pastor’s prayers are powerful. But your personal commitment is what activates the promise.

Get to work.
Let your life reflect prophecy fulfilled through effort and discipline.
