‘LEGACY OVER LUXURY’
A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

Ayo walked into the room and met his wife crying. Their teenage son had just called her from school, he had been sent home again for unpaid fees.
It wasn’t that they didn’t have the money.
Ayo had just paid for a new car stereo, the latest phone, and a weekend getaway with the boys. But when it came to school fees, his usual line was: “We’ll sort it next month.”
That day, his wife said something that pierced his soul:
> “You’ve upgraded your lifestyle, but you’re downgrading our son’s future.”
It hit him like a thunderclap.
He remembered a character he once read about in the Bible—Barzillai. A wealthy man who had the chance to follow King David and enjoy royal benefits, but instead said, “Let my son go in my place.” (2 Samuel 19:37)
Barzillai chose legacy over luxury.
That night, Ayo cancelled the trip, sold the stereo, and enrolled his son in a better school. “My gain is nothing,” he said, “if my son pays the price for it.”
Parents today are under pressure to look successful, even if it means sacrificing the success of their children.
But true greatness is not in what you acquire, it’s in what you sacrifice to raise the next generation.
Barzillai had wealth and status, but he used it to position his son for greatness. The result? That son, Chimham, became a notable figure in Israel’s history, potentially hosting Mary and Joseph the night Jesus was born.
Your child’s destiny may depend on what you are willing to lay down today.
Do you want to be remembered for your designer outfits or for raising a child who built hospitals, fed nations, or carried revival?
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE:
“But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you wish.” – 2 Samuel 19:37 (NIV)
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, give me the wisdom to invest in my child’s future and not just my present pleasure.
2. Father, help me break free from the pressure of appearances and focus on lasting impact.
3. Raise me to be a Barzillai-like parent, willing to sacrifice today for a greater tomorrow.
CALL TO ACTION:
Dear Dad, that new iPhone can wait.
Dear Mum, the latest gold chain won’t teach your daughter wisdom.
Let’s raise sons and daughters that heaven will celebrate.
