CHAPTER ELEVEN “CONVINCED”

Teju’s POV

“Hello mummy, good morning ma.”

I heard Imade’s voice ring loudly.

“Please mum, Teju told me you said we are not having our honeymoon again. Mummy, what exactly do you want from me? You said I should marry him …I have married him. Now no honeymoon? What do you want again? Marrying him is misery in the first place, and now you want my life to be hell.”

I froze.

Two things hit me at the same time.

First ; she said it plainly.
She married me out of obedience, not desire.

Second ; she called marrying me misery.

I turned away from her slowly and walked back to my side of the bed.

I didn’t trust my mouth.

“Mummy, I don’t care what the prophet said. I am travelling for my honeymoon. Bye.”. She ended the call abruptly and flung the phone onto the bed.

Then she looked at me.

“Let me guess,” she said mockingly. “Your tail has gone in. Admit it … you’re a coward. Just say it. Tell me you’ll obey her.”

I turned sharply.

“I am not a coward!” I said.
“I’m not obeying her. I’m obeying the word of God from the man of God.”

She laughed.

“Potato, potahto. Same difference.”

“Whether you stay back or not is your business,” she added. “I’m going.”

“I won’t disobey God,” I said firmly.

Truth?
I wasn’t even that deep spiritually.

But something in me wanted to push back.

She called marrying me misery … maybe a taste of discomfort would make her realise what she had in front of her
Maybe absence would teach appreciation.

“Do you… and I’ll do me.” She said

I didn’t understand the weight of those words until I saw her open her bags.

Until I saw her pulling out clothes.

Until I heard her book a ride.

It was only when she walked toward the door that reality hit me.

“Are you seriously leaving me behind?” I asked.

She turned.

“It’s my honeymoon,” she said flatly.
“And I won’t let you ruin it for me.”

“My honeymoon?” I repeated slowly.

The word suddenly sounded like what I didn’t understand.
Foreign.
Empty.

I laughed … not because it was funny, but because it was unbelievable.

That was when it hit me clearly.

Imade was not confused.

She was decisive.

And this marriage?

It was never about us.

It was always about her. She was married to herself. There was no me in the picture…
