CHAPTER 21 “CORDELIA”

The room was beautiful, but beauty couldn’t fool my heart.

As I walked slowly across it, tears still wet on my cheeks, I noticed small things that made me shiver. A perfume bottle half-empty on the dresser. A faint stain on one of the pillowcases. A scarf folded too neatly in the wardrobe corner. Whoever had arranged the room wanted me to believe it was mine. But no…someone else had lived here. Someone else had been Eve before me.

The realization sat heavy on me like a stone. I ran my fingers along the walls, as if I could touch the memory of the last woman forced into this same trap. I bent down, checked under the bed, searched the wardrobe, opened the drawers. Nothing. But I felt it … the eerie presence of a woman who once cried in this same room, maybe louder than I was crying now.

My knees gave way and I fell to the ground.

“God…” I wept sore, my body shaking. “Why didn’t You stop me from coming here? Why did You let me walk into this prison? Send T.J! Send my church! Let them break the gates and drag me out! Please!”

But the room only gave me silence. Heavy, deafening silence. It was as though heaven itself had locked me out. I pressed my forehead to the floor and sobbed until I had no more strength.

Sometime later, my eyes closed. Sleep came, but not the peaceful kind. It was like I had been knocked out. I couldn’t fight it.

Then I felt it …strong arms lifting me from the cold floor. My body rose, but my spirit screamed. I wanted to wake, to push, to fight, but I couldn’t move. My eyelids were sealed like stone.

The hands laid me gently on the bed. For a second, I thought maybe it was an angel. Maybe help had come. But then the hand tugged at my clothes. Ripped fabric whispered louder than my cries.

“No… no!” I screamed inside. But outside, nothing came out. My body stayed frozen.

A masculine hand traced its way across me. I wanted to kick, to scratch, to fight … but I was trapped in my own skin. Inside, I cried to God, Please! Please intervene! But the hand kept moving, shameless, unstoppable.

Then a voice. Soft. Familiar. Too familiar.

“Stop crying,” it whispered. Not Father’s voice. Soji’s.

“You are not ready… You must be willing. You are still struggling. Stop struggling. It’s ordained.”

The same words. The same words. But not from the altar this time …from the man himself.

I wanted to die in that moment.

That was when the veil ripped in my mind. Father Soji, Soji the man …they were the same. The dream where a man told me it was ordained , the “prophecy” of the Iben Twins… it was all scripted. A trap carefully set.

Tears slid down my frozen face. Inside, I screamed louder, God, wake me! Please wake me!

But my eyes refused to open. My limbs refused to move.

Why?
