Martha had two daughters, Ada and Bisi. Ada was quiet, book-smart, and obedient, while Bisi was outspoken, adventurous, and strong-willed. Everyone in the family, including Martha, seemed to praise Ada more. Whenever visitors came, Martha proudly spoke of Ada’s good grades, while often scolding Bisi in front of others.

One evening, Bisi muttered under her breath, “Maybe if I mess up more, she will notice me too.” From that day, she started coming home late, ignoring instructions, and deliberately doing things she knew her mother disliked.

It wasn’t that Bisi hated her mother—she was only reacting to years of feeling less loved, less celebrated, and less preferred. Her rebellion was a cry for attention.

Openly showing preference in families, workplaces, churches, or friendships creates room for bitterness and rebellion. Children who feel sidelined may rebel to “make you feel what they feel.” Employees who believe a colleague is favored may withdraw or even sabotage work.

Esau was a victim of this. Isaac loved him, but Rebekah openly preferred Jacob. Out of hurt, Esau rebelled by marrying foreign wives, a decision meant to provoke his parents (Genesis 26:34–35). His rebellion was not just wickedness—it was the response of a heart that felt rejected.

Beloved, be careful of showing partiality. God calls us to walk in wisdom, giving love and attention without favoritism. What looks like rebellion may just be the fruit of a wounded heart.

KEY SCRIPTURE:
James 2:9 – “But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.”

PRAYER:

Lord, help me to love without favoritism in my family, workplace, and relationships.

Father, heal every wounded heart around me that has been hurt by neglect or rejection.

Lord, give me wisdom to treat people fairly and not create room for rebellion.
