‘NOT JUST BREAD’

A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

I once visited a young man, Kola, in the hospital. He had collapsed from constant overwork. He was diligent with his career, never missed meals, vitamins, or gym routines. His body was well-fed, but his spirit was starving.

On his bedside table lay an untouched Bible, still wrapped in the gift nylon it came with two years ago.

When I asked him about it, he chuckled, “I’ve been too busy for that. Bread keeps me going.”

But doesn’t this echo what Jesus said? “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

Kola’s body was strong, but when life’s battles came; stress, fear, emptiness, he had no inner strength to draw from. His spiritual muscles had withered.

That day, he realized that true strength isn’t found only in food, exercise, or money—but in the Word of God.

Many of us carefully plan our meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner. But how many of us plan our spiritual meals?

Just as the body weakens without food, the spirit collapses without the Word.

David said, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Job declared, “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my daily bread.” (Job 23:12)

Friend, don’t feed your body and starve your soul. Make it a habit to eat daily from the Scriptures just like you never skip a meal.
