CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN”CONVINCED”

Teju’s POV
Imade walked past me like I was furniture.
I was seated in the living room, when she walked out. I had waited for her to eventually come out. My eyes were swollen. My head ached. My chest felt hollow, like something important had been scooped out and forgotten on the floor.
“Let me guess,” she said, adjusting her bag, already halfway to the door.
“You’re not coming to the office?”
I didn’t answer.
I couldn’t.
What was there to say?
This was not the life I prayed for.
I had grown up doing everything right.
Good child.
Obedient son.
No rebellion.
No shortcuts.
I followed instructions because I believed obedience would lead to happiness.
But here I was… married, lonely, untouched, unloved, and exhausted.
“Hmmm,” Imade continued, unfazed by my silence.
“Suit yourself. Our parents will be coming for our anniversary dinner later. Please look good.”
Look good.
Anniversary.
Dinner.
I heard the words but they didn’t register.
She didn’t ask how I was.
Didn’t ask if I was okay.
Didn’t even pretend.
She turned, opened the door, and left.
I stayed there.
Ten minutes passed.
Maybe more.
I didn’t check the time.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But I had developed a habit… whenever Imade was out, I picked unknown calls. Just in case. Emergency. Accident. Work.
“Hello,” I said weakly.
“Good morning, Mr Teju.”
The voice was calm. Deep. Controlled. The kind of voice that didn’t need to raise itself to command attention.
“Good morning,” I replied.
“My name is Daniel K.” He said
“I met your wife, Imade, two years ago during a vacation trip. On your honeymoon.”
The room suddenly felt too small.
“We spent time together…” he continued evenly. “We talked. We connected. We had a… good …a great time.”
Good time.
“But I made it clear to her that I would not be the reason her marriage breaks,” he said.
“So I left the hotel.”
My hand trembled.
“Since then,” he went on, “your wife has been looking for me. Calling hotels. Asking staff. Showing up in places I go to.”
Each word landed like a slap.
“I am married,” he added. “And it’s becoming uncomfortable. My wife and I arrive at places and hear that someone came looking for me. Your wife.”
Silence swallowed me.
“I love my wife,” he concluded.
“I respect my home. Please tell your wife to be content with what she has.”
The line went dead.
I sat there.
Staring.
The phrase kept echoing.
“We had a great time together.”
So that was it.
While I was praying….Waiting….Begging….Protecting my vows like they meant something…
She was building memories with another man.
On our honeymoon.
The tears came then.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
Just hot and uncontrollable.
I laughed suddenly.
A painful, empty laugh.
So the problem was not the lack of intimacy.
She just didn’t want me.
And I… had spent two years guarding a marriage that had already been abandoned before it even started.
I leaned back on the couch, eyes closed with me trying to embrace my reality…
This marriage… had finally ended.
Not with shouting.
Not with cheating.
But with truth.
And truth, I realized, hurts worse than betrayal.
To be continued…

Imade! You are gone.
“Things Fall Apart”, the centre cannot hold (Chinua Achebe)
Daniel you’re married you forget about that while you were flirting with her?
Imade if like do anyhow, if you lost this Teju ehn!…. Let me stop.
God bless you Mummy💚
Teju should just leave, he should protect himself, his heart, the weight Imade is dropping on him is too heavy, he should go and start his life again. Imade is just too stubborn, and he’s been too kind. God help them o

Exactly. Why calling her husband what for, where did he get the number? Something is missing, as if he is not sent to break the marriage.
Imade!!!!
I really feel for Teju! God please let this marriage work
Daniel should have the guts to call Imade and tell her this instead of Teju if he is not a demon sent to destroy the marriage. Imade is a foolish virgin.

At last, Imade used her hand to throw away God’s blessing. I hope she does not wake up every day of her life to regret her actions and even inactions
Hmmmmmmmm…………

If she has used that same energy she used to search for Daniel to build something with Teju her marriage will have been better
