WHEN MERCY WINS

A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

As Inspired by the LIVING WORD

Dara sat alone in the living room, staring at the wall. Her heart felt like it had been smashed into pieces. Just the day before, she had found her younger brother, Femi, taking money out of her business safe, money she had saved for months to secure a shop space.

Femi didn’t deny it.
He simply knelt, crying, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know what else to do.”

But the betrayal sliced deep. Dara had raised him since their parents died. She sacrificed school, dreams, and comfort just to make sure he became someone. And now this?

For days, she didn’t speak to him. She stopped eating. She stopped praying. She felt justified in her anger until an unexpected visitor walked into her shop.

It was Mrs. Alade, their late mother’s closest friend. A woman who knew the family well. As soon as she saw Dara, she sighed deeply.

“My daughter,” she said gently, “I heard what happened. But before you sink further into bitterness, let me remind you of something.”

She pulled a chair close.
“You remember the year you crashed your mother’s car? The one she just finished paying for? You nearly died in that accident. But do you remember how your mother responded?”

Dara swallowed. Her throat tightened.
Her mother didn’t beat her.
Didn’t shout.
Didn’t even complain.

She simply said, “As long as you are alive, a car is nothing.”

Mrs. Alade nodded slowly. “Your mother forgave you instantly. She called me that night and said, ‘Dara is worth more than anything she lost.’”

Dara burst into tears. She remembered. She remembered the mercy she received. The mercy she didn’t deserve.

Mrs. Alade held her hand. “We forgive not because people deserve it, but because God forgave us when we didn’t deserve it. Femi’s wrong is painful, but is it greater than the things God has covered for you? None of us is sinless.”

Her words pierced Dara’s heart.
She had been forgiven countless times yet she held on to just one offence like it was her breath.

That night, Dara went home. Femi was sitting outside, head bowed, expecting another day of silence.

But instead, she sat beside him.
“Stand up,” she whispered.
He rose slowly.

Then she hugged him.
“I forgive you,” she said, crying into his shoulder. “Not because it’s easy… but because God has forgiven me too many times to count.”

Two years later, Femi became the manager of Dara’s second shop, faithful, changed, and deeply grateful.

And every time people asked Dara why she trusted him again, she simply smiled and said:
“When mercy wins, love always wins too.”

Forgiveness is not weakness.
It is strength wrapped in humility.

You have been forgiven more times than you can ever count.
Don’t let one offence lock your heart in bitterness.

God is displeased when those He has forgiven repeatedly refuse to extend the same mercy. Forgive not for their sake, but for your healing, your peace, and your walk with God.

KEY SCRIPTURE:
Matthew 18:21–22 — “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy times seven.”

PRAYER POINTS:

Lord, help me release every bitterness and forgive from my heart.
