‘LOOKS CAN LIE’
A Deep Thoughts Devotional Story

It was a hot, dusty afternoon when I heard a knock on the office door. I wasn’t expecting any client, but there they stood, three women, visibly tired, dressed in plain clothes, feet smeared with dust, and faces drenched in sweat.
I blinked.
They didn’t “look” like my usual clientele. And my office? Spotless. Bridal chairs sparkling. Drapes arranged like royalty. Yet, one of them, without invitation, sat on my prized turquoise vintage chair, then bounced onto the white bridal sofa. I smiled, but truthfully, I cringed.
“Can we get a decoration package for a 2000-guest event?” one of them asked calmly.
2000 what? I thought.
I almost laughed politely, of course. I couldn’t help but mentally size them up. “They can’t possibly afford what they’re asking.” Still, I gave them my usual warm response. I ran through the catalogue. I threw out a random six-figure quotation just to speed up their exit.
Her reply?
“Is that your last price?”
I blinked again. “Yes ma, because of our friendly conversation.”
“Okay. Let’s go to the car for your advance.”
Car?
We stepped outside, and the only vehicle in sight was a spotless Hummer Jeep. The calm woman pulled out a bundle of crisp notes and paid on the spot. She took my details and said, “I like your patience with us.”
Turns out, she was the wife of a prominent oil tycoon. They had just returned from bulk shopping at the Lagos fabric market and had decided to walk into my office before heading home.
If I had acted on my bias, I would have lost that job. In fact, they had initially booked another decorator. But because of my calm response despite appearances, the job became mine.
Now contrast this:
Another woman came in days later, well-dressed, eloquent, flanked by a personal bodyguard. Claimed she was a daughter-in-law to a former President. Sounded influential. The Holy Spirit whispered, “Don’t fall for it.”
She promised me “big” jobs, but only if I would bribe some people. I politely declined. Weeks later, I discovered she was a serial scammer using borrowed status and fake names to trick vendors.

James 2:2–4 teaches us:
“If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘Sit at my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves?”
Too often, we are guilty of judging by sight. We honor the polished and dismiss the scruffy. But the value of a person is never in their clothes, accent, or car, it’s in their purpose, their assignment, and who God says they are.
Don’t ignore destiny helpers because they don’t look the part.

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, help me never to judge by appearances.
2. Father, sharpen my spiritual discernment so I don’t miss divine opportunities.
3. I cancel every spirit of pride and assumption that can cost me my lifting.
****
MORAL:
📌 Be kind to strangers.
📌 Be sensitive to the Spirit.
📌 Don’t let packaging make you miss purpose.
That dusty-looking person could be the door to your next breakthrough.
Looks can lie, but the Spirit never does.
